个人观点:剑桥的辞典比牛津的解释更加通俗易懂(高中毕业或者中五水平就完全可以明白了),排版更加合理、清晰,自从发现剑桥辞典后,我就彻底抛弃
牛津字典了。CALD目前在国内并没有纸质版,但是这个电子版做得相当好,我个人很推崇。
Everything in the dictionary and more - all on one great CD-ROM!
The CD-ROM gives lots of extra help with reading, writing, listening and speaking. Click below to see some of the features.
Pronunciation by native speakers
For every word in the dictionary you can click on the 'speaker' symbol and hear the word pronounced by a native speaker. The red speaker gives you the word in British English. The blue one gives you it in American English.
Practise your pronunciation
If you click on the 'microphone' symbol you can record your own pronunciation of the word and can compare it with the native speakers. It's just like having your teacher in the computer!
SMART thesaurus
If you click on the SMART thesaurus button at any word in the dictionary, it will automatically show you all the words with a similar meaning.
To give you an idea of what it is like, think of the sentence "My sister is very pretty". What other words can you think of that mean the same as pretty in this sentence?
What the SMART thesaurus looks like
This is what you see in the SMART thesaurus if you click on the button at the word tree. The list on the left shows you all the phrases with this meaning. There are a lot more than the ones you can see on this screen. There are about 50 words on this list which are all connected in some way with tree.
The middle screen shows you what each word means. The screen on the right shows you other groups of words that you might want to see. In this way you can start with a small number of words and then explore all of the English language!
Advanced searches
You can use the 'Advanced Search' button to search for particular areas of language. For instance, you can search for idioms only, or phrasal verbs only, or by topic area. The screen shows idioms which contain the word story.
QUICKfind
QUICKfind works like magic to find words when you are on the Internet or reading on a computer. You just have to point at a word with your mouse and the definition will appear in the QUICKfind window in the corner of your screen.
In this screen you can see that QUICKfind has looked up the word training from the Webpage.
SUPERwrite
If you are writing on-screen, SUPERwrite helps you to write better English.
It gives you useful information about grammar, collocation and common errors at the click of a mouse. This screen shows you what happens when you click on the word advice while writing in a word-processing document.
Exercises
The CD-ROM contains many different types of exercise which can be done on screen or printed out for use in the classroom. There are 7 types of word exercises, containing hundreds of randomly generated sentences, which focus on grammar and usage, and 36 picture exercises which are very useful for vocabulary building and practice.
