Internet 是一个由许多网路 (目前约为 4000 个) 串接起来的超大网路，翻译为「网际」网路可也 (也有人称为国际网路)，其中各个小型网路散布在全球各地，以共同的语言 (TCP/IP，一种网路通讯协定) 流通资讯。网路上的使用者可以透过 Internet 提供的各种服务 (包括 E-mail、FTP、Telnet、Gophor、WWW 等等) 与其它用户沟通，或是从其它机器上获得各式各样的资源 (资料)。没有阶级，不分贫富，网路上人人平等，你在 Internet 上的权力和美国总统的权力是一样的。
Internet 的技术骨乾，就是 TCP/IP 网路技术。许多人在这基础上面贡献心力，开发出各式各样的高阶应用 (你就把它们想象是各种应用软体好了)。重要的应用包括：
o. E-mail (飞鸽传书) - 送到网路另一端的资料如果是封信的话，就是电子邮件罗。 电子邮件有一定的格式，一定的地址表达方式 (所谓的 FQDN，例如 jjhou@w200.ccl.itri.org.tw)。使用电子邮件不必出门，也不会有洪乔之误。 (洪乔不是洪小乔。晋朝殷羡，字洪乔，为人带信百封，尽投江中。今比喻信件遗失 为洪乔之误)
o. FTP (File Transfer Protocol)(档案传输) - 这是一种协定 (事实上 所有的 Internet 服务你都可以说是一种协定，大家循规榘做 事情)，允许你从别台主机下载档案 (正在执行 TCP/IP 的 电脑称为主机)。要进入别台主机，你必须有账号，为鼓励资源 共享，许多主机均开放一个 Anonymous (匿名者) 账号，并以用户的 FQDN 地址 为密码。
o. Archie (档案搜寻) - FTP 主机何其多，你想独力在 Internet 中寻找所要的档案， 犹如大海捞针，Archie 提供给你以关键字搜寻档案的服务。作法是由各个 FTP 主机定时提供资讯给 Archie 主机，更新档案目录。
o. Telnet (远端登录) - 允许你透过网路，使用其它主机上的资源，犹如你直接 使用那台主机。
o. WAIS (Wide Area Information Server) - 以全文检索的方式，帮助我们找资料， 最适用于寻找某一主题或关键字的文章。研究生写论文时恐怕少不得要用到它。
o. NetNews (网路新闻) - 用户大放厥辞的地方，心得交换的公开场所。主要分为 七大论坛，有电脑软硬体、科学研究、艺术休闲、政经文化、News 网路、宗教、 其它。
o. Gophor (分布式文件传输) - 把上述服务整合起来，以选单方式，让用户层层 接近目的地。
o. WWW (World Wide Web，全球资讯网) - 也是一种整合 Internet 网路资源 搜寻服务的工具，与 Gophor 最大的不同是它利用超链结 (hyperlink) 技术 整理资料 (这种方式在资讯科学中称为 web)，使用非常方便。
说这么多，你大概以为侯捷忘了自己该做什么，竟尔卖弄起自己的知识来了。噢，上面这些知识就是我从这本书得来的。Internet 已成为杂志的热门话题，微电脑传真以及 RunPC 两本杂志都有 Internet 专栏，累积了近半年，上面都有很不错的文章以及很宝贵的资料。
