How to Play Najdorf vol.1 共9讲,由卡斯帕罗夫讲授。

The Najdorf system in the Sicilian Defence has a legendary reputation as a defensive weapon for Black. It is an opening where people often strive for a full point, instead of simply defending the position with the black pieces. Many great players have contributed to the development of this complex opening. There were two world champions who formed much of their careers using the Najdorf system as their weapon of choice against 1.e4: Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov celebrated spectacular successes with it. Both players used the Najdorf (pronounced “ny-dorff”, rhyming with “high-dwarf”) during their child prodigy years and retained it as an important part of their repertoire during their entire careers.

Book Introduction

This is another fine book from Max Euwe, although written at a slightly higher level than Chess Master vs. Chess Amature. I especially recommend the first several chaptures on forming a queenside attack. Euwe writes in a style similar to Silman's popular Reassess Your Chess but covers more about the technique of carrying out an attack rather than the basic elements of the position. This makes it a book more suited for intermediate level players then beginners. Euwe often analysis subvariations for many moves which requires setting up several boards to follow him, but this effort is well worth it as he demonstrates the ideas behind the plan and the technique for exploiting common features in a position.

About the author

ChessCafe.com columnist and author Mark Dvoretsky is regarded as the leading chess coarch in the world, and in this series of books he reveals the training methods that have transformed so many of his pupils into champions. This first title is devoted to the endgame, and examines a wide range of positions, taken mainly from games of the author's pupils. The comments are packed with practical advice and special test positions and frequent questions that assure that the reader's participation in the book is an active one.

Book Introduction
Compared with the other books in this series, substantially more space is given to the analysis of the opening problems that confront a player in a particular game. The first half of the book is altogether devoted to the opening preparation, and in the second half, nearly every game is accompanied by detailed opening information.

Book Introduction

This third volume in Mark Dvoretsky’s School of Chess Excellence series is devoted to questions of strategy aimed at improving the reader’s positional understanding. The author also examines a number of positions that lie on the boundary between the middlegame and the endgame. As in the other books in the series, Dvoretsky uses examples from his own games and those of his pupils as well as episodes from other players’ games.

Book Introduction

In this second book in his School of Chess Excellence series, Mark Dvoretsky looks at combinations and tactical techniques and suggests methods for developing a player’s ability to calculate. Using a number of fascinating examples, he also analyzes methods of attack and defense. The book also includes special test positions and questions to engage and instruct the reader.

Book Introduction

This book is simply amazing. It covers many endgames in an in-depth and unique way. It shows players how to look for moves that they would otherwise ignore. It has enabled me to win or save many endgames that I would have otherwise been unable to fight. This book has many side variations however, making it extremely arduous to get through. However, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to take their endgame skills to the next level.

About the author

Kotov, GrandMaster, had a number of good results as a player. One of his best early results was his second place finish in the 1939 USSR Championship, just missing out to Mikhail Botvinnik in the final round. This result won him the Grandmaster title, the third Soviet player to hold the title after Botvinnik and Grigory Levenfish. He won the title jointly with David Bronstein in 1948, and won at Venice in 1950, ahead of Vasily Smyslov.

Book Introdution

Kotov's trilogy of books Think Like a Grandmaster, Play Like a Grandmaster and Plan Like a Grandmaster are his best known, with Think Like... (which was translated into English by Bernard Cafferty and published by Batsford in 1971) being particularly famous. The book is not concerned with advising where pieces should be placed on the board, or tactical motifs, but rather with the method of thinking that should be employed during a game. Kotov's advice to identify "candidate moves" and methodically examine them to build up an "analysis tree" remains well known today.

A Guide to Chess Endings

About the author

Dr. Max Euwe, a former world champion, is one of the most knowledgeable writers on chess and endgame theory; David Hooper is a master player and analyst who has himself written books on the endgame. Chess players who are familiar with other books on the endgame will find this to be one of the most useful books ever written on this area of chess.

Book Introdution

This clear and thorough coverage of the most important, most frequently encountered endgame situations is one of the finest modern works on chess endings. With analysis of 331 examples, each with its own diagram, this book makes use of over 40 composed endgames by such famous figures as Cheron and Grigoriev, and of endings from 149 master games by such players as Smyslov, Marshall, Reshevsky, Tartakower, Keres, Euwe, Bronstein, Flohr, Botvinnik, Kotov, Capablanca, Alekhine, and many others.

In addition to approximately thirty examples of Queen endings, the book contains about a hundred examples each of Pawn endings, minor piece endings, and Rook endings. Each of these sections is precisely categorized. By working through all the examples in the book and the straight-forward rules for winning or losing in a given situation, the average chess player will gain an understanding of the ending that will be of immeasurable aid in any game situation.

How not to play Chess and How to play Chess Openings

About the author

Eugene Alexandrovich Znosko-Borovsky

As a player, Znosko-Borovsky fell short of the very highest accolades. He did however have some notable results in international competition, including Paris 1930, where he finished first without loss, ahead of Savielly Tartakower, Andrei Lilienthal and Jacques Mieses. Success often came in individual encounters with his more distinguished peers; he also won impressive games against Jose Raul Capablanca, Akiba Rubinstein, Max Euwe and Efim Bogoljubov as well as a short match with Edgard Colle in 1922. At simultaneous exhibition play, his record was the equal of any great master of the period.

In conversation and as a lecturer, teacher or writer of chess, his abilities were widely acknowledged, particularly in Russia and France where he also contributed regular articles and columns to magazines and newspapers. Indeed, it was in the field of writing that he excelled, penning many popular books including The Evolution of Chess (1910), Capablanca and The Muzio Gambit (both 1911). Capablanca and Alekhine followed World War I, How not to play Chess, How to play Chess Openings and The Art of Chess Combination.

How to play Chess Openings

The author recommends understanding of the openings rather than to try to memorize endless variations. After giving the first principles of the openings, he then shows how the openings should be played using these principles. He also devotes a section on exploiting the weak squares of your opponent. He classifies the openings under four catagories, which is very helpful in organizing the ideas behind these openings.

How not to play Chess

What this book gives is a broad picture of what you are trying to achieve when you play chess. It takes you above the region of move by move analysis and sets you the task of viewing the game as a strategic whole. If you can grasp this high level view of the game of chess, you have a better chance of improving your game. This is a book about the thinking behind chess and the strategy element, as opposed to tactics.
Very short, very readable and entertaining, and a useful companion to quite a high level.

Chess Fundermentals

J.R. Capablanca was a World Chess Champion and one of the greatest players in chess history, yet he wrote very little about the game. Chess Fundamentals, though normally for the beginning player, contains valuable insights that will benefit players at all levels of understanding, including masters. Capablanca explains:

·How to obtain and nurture a passed pawn
·How to get and keep the initiative
·Cardinal rules for rook and pawn endings
·How to attack using knight as the main force
·How to cut off enemy pieces

Chess Fundamentals is one of the jewels of chess literature.

A Primer of Chess and Chess Fundermentals。

(以下简介摘自中国国际象棋协会网chess.sport.org.cn)
